Central Lima – Day 54

Lima is such a colourful city!  I have only heard bad things about Lima and again I have to wonder why.  We’ve moved from Barranco to Central Lima because this is day one of our Geckos Machu Picchu tour and it starts in this hotel (Hotel Maury) which is right in the middle of the city.  Just down the road are amazing museums and churches.

We walked to Plaza de Amos (aka Plaza Mayor) and went into the Museum and church, Cathedral of Lima.  Some of this church was built in the 1600’s and its grandeur is overwhelming.  There are some extremely old, extremely beautiful statues in this church as well as some beautiful old bishop outfits.  Also, so many jewel encrusted sceptres.  It makes me wonder (without wanting to cause offense) how they could adorn themselves and their churches in gold and jewels when the city outside is starving.

  The one thing that really shocked me was going down into the tombs under the church we saw this;

I honestly did not know how to feel about this.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dead human being in real life before, although you could also argue that it’s just bones, not much left of the person.  But it was still a shock.

After this we ventured further into the plaza where we were then kicked out by some riot Policia… still unsure as to what they were doing in there but thought it was a fantastic photo op!

Around the Plaza there are heaps of really nice artisan shops with beautiful gems, carvings and handicrafts.  I fell in love with a little wooden Llama with silver bells.  As usual, I had to have it.  We’ve already named him Larry the Llama (although, they pronounce Llama as Yama here so I’ve named him Yarry the Yama).   You have to purchase some of the local handicrafts when you’re here otherwise you’re just crazy!

We also went into a bigger convent/cathedral called Iglesia de Santa Domingo this was also beautiful and ornate.  There were a few Saints buried there (Saint Rosa Lima, San Martin de Porres) and a beautiful little garden.  It was only 5Sol to get in and we got a free English speaking guide (although it’s nice to tip them).  Lima seems to be full of these beautiful churches and museums.  Full of art and romantic ideals, no wonder I love it!

Also… The food is awesome!

Well, we’ll most likely have something great to say about Cuzco soon enough.  Until then, Adios!

Chrissy.
